The UNC Greensboro School of Theatre is pleased to present The Tempest, running February 14-16 and 19-22 in the Taylor Theatre. This production of Shakespeare’s comedy sets the play 12 years after World War II. In a world filled with music and magic, Prospera, a powerful sorceress, embarks on her journey to become whole again. Reality meets fantasy as the royal families of Naples and Milan are shipwrecked on a mystical island inhabited by fairies, spirits, and a fish monster.  Prospera conjures up a storm that brings her face to face with those who exiled her 12 years earlier.

The amazing jazz music that accompanies the production symbolizes the free-flowing spirit of the characters onstage, as well as the struggle of Prospera’s inner psyche.  Most of the leading roles reflect gender swaps which provide opportunities to female student actors and highlights women in roles of power. This play about family, forgiveness, and classism is told through the charm of both magic and comedy. It is a spectacle not to be missed.

At the helm, award-winning director, Ashley Sarver, brings an exciting and innovative vision for her production of The Tempest. As a former jazz musician in Chicago who performed with the Freddie Franken jazz trio, Sarver will be composing jazz music which will underscore Shakespeare’s text. Sarver is in her second year as a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts in Directing at UNCG. She is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University and has won awards for directing, playwriting and teaching. Sarver is excited to bring a fresh and ambitious approach to The Tempest.
